Solitude - and solifuges

A selection of Lydia's photos from her Picasso album Summer in South Africa.

Stephen's miraculous ice-cold G&T in temperatures that reached over 40 degrees one day!

Paul's telescope.

Relaxing on the veranda.
Swimming.
Tinus de Jongh-pink mountains.
Richard and Alexander looking out on to the Suurvlakte Ridge - Gun Peak on the left - looking more like a tortoise than a gun.
This solifuge (a rather scary but non-venomous arachnid) was captured on camera by Alexander in the cottage one night in the middle of a game of Trivial Pursuit, which was continued from a higher elevation after the strange gogga went to ground under some boxes. Common names for it include sun spider, red roman, wind scorpion, wind spider, camel spider, baardskeerder and rooiman - but read more about them on the SA Museum's Biodiversity explorer website.
